Thieves walk out of Cartier store in Rome with £440,000 ring
Smooth-talking thieves walk off with most expensive ring in jewellery shop after distracting saleswomanPolice in Rome are trying to track down two well-dressed and smooth-talking men who stole Cartier's most expensive ring after telling shop assistants they needed it for a wedding gift.Without pulling a weapon, the two men walked off with a €500,000 (£440,000) diamond-encrusted ring on Tuesday evening from Cartier's store on Via Condotti, near Rome's Spanish Steps, police said.Police official Paolo Guiso, who is leading the investigation, said the thieves, speaking Arabic and French, talked their way into seeing several rings and stole the best after distracting the saleswoman.Cartier's press office in Milan declined to describe the stolen ring or confirm Italian press reports that a five-carat diamond formed the centrepiece, with smaller diamonds around it.Police said the thieves worked deftly and quickly. "One man distracted the saleswoman," Guiso said, and while she was taking out still another ring to show the customers, "the other quickly took the ring".He said one of the men then left, claiming he needed to find someone who spoke Italian but never came back. The other man calmly walked out of the store. Both apparently blended into a crowd of shoppers outside before police arrived.Witnesses said the pair were seen getting into a waiting sedan with a driver but Guiso said it had not been confirmed that the thieves had a getaway car waiting.Italian news reports said the thieves were North Africans but Guiso said that investigators were still trying to determine their nationality.Police said images from a video surveillance camera were being examined.Italyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
